Before You Chase That Big Discount—Check This First (MY-2024 STOCK)

Seven months of 2025 have already passed, and many dealerships still have 2024-manufactured vehicles sitting in their stockyards. To clear this inventory, dealers are offering hefty discounts—and while that might seem like a great deal, it comes with an important catch.

Before you get caught in the discount trap, check the vehicle’s age and insist that critical parts be replaced as per OEM guidelines for long-storage vehicles.

Here’s why it matters.

Why Refurbishing Long-Stored Cars Before Delivery Is Critical

When you walk into a dealership to buy a brand-new car, you expect nothing short of perfection—flawless performance, a spotless exterior, and that fresh factory feel. However, what many customers don’t realize is that sometimes vehicles have been sitting in the dealer’s stockyard for months, even years, before being handed over. That’s where Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) refurbishing comes in—a behind-the-scenes process crucial for ensuring quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.

The Hidden Challenge of Long-Storage Vehicles

Many OEMs have identified a concern in dealership operations: a significant number of new cars and utility vehicles (UVs) remain in dealer stockyards for extended periods. Whether due to market fluctuations or inventory management issues, these vehicles risk developing minor issues simply from being idle for too long.

Delivering these cars as-is would not only risk early part failures but could also severely damage customer trust in the brand.

Mandatory Refurbishing – A Shared Responsibility

OEMs and their dealer networks share joint responsibility for ensuring each car delivered reflects the Original Equipment (OE) build quality. Regardless of whether a car is sold with or without a discount, refurbishing is mandatory.

Here’s why:

  • It minimizes the chances of mechanical or cosmetic issues after delivery.

  • It reduces the dealer’s need to offer steep discounts just to move old stock.

  • It improves long-term brand perception and reduces warranty claims.

What Gets Checked and Replaced?

The refurbishing process is based on how long the car has been in storage. Below is a summary of suggested inspection and replacement items based on duration in stock:

Note: General checks as per the PDI checklist include:

  • Roof and door beading

  • Fading of bumper/trim

  • Functioning of A/C system

  • CR system

  • Fuel system

  • Electrical coupler joints

  • Flat spots on tires

Warranty Exclusion if Skipped

OEMs are very clear: any failure arising due to non-compliance with refurbishing guidelines will not be covered under warranty. Dealers would have to bear the cost of repairs themselves if the required refurbishing steps were skipped.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Just Buy a Discount—Buy Peace of Mind

That big discount on a 2024 car might seem like a win, but it's only truly worth it if the vehicle has been properly refurbished for its age. Always ask the dealer to disclose the manufacturing date and to confirm that all refurbishment procedures have been followed as per OEM guidelines.

Don’t hesitate to request the PDI checklist and service confirmation before you sign the dotted line. Because at the end of the day, you deserve a car that performs like it just rolled out of the factory—no matter when it was made.
